FACT: SSSTS vs SMSTS, Which Training Course Do I Need?
A health and safety qualification is an important requirement for all businesses, but if you’re in the construction industry, you’ll probably need to decide between an SSSTS or SMSTS certification. The two courses are similar but choosing the right course will vary depending on your job position. Here’s all you need to know before deciding on which course to take:
What does SSSTS stand for and who is the SSSTS course best-suited to?
SSSTS stands for Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme and is the construction industry standard for first-line managers and supervisors. If you are currently a supervisor and are looking to move into a more managerial role, this is a good training certificate to add to your CV. Also, if you are a supervisor working on a UKCG site, or one belonging to the Major Contractors Group, you’ll need the SSSTS certificate beforehand.
It is a two-day course and won’t be as detailed as the SMSTS training scheme, as it is designed to give supervisors an understanding and compliance with the health and safety systems needed, rather than the legal frameworks that managers require.
What can I expect from an SSSTS course?
On an SSSTS course, you’ll learn more about health and safety legislation, and how to complete risk assessments and manage hazards so that you are ready to step into your role with confidence.
What does SMSTS stand for and who is the SMSTS course best suited for?
SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme. It is best suited for project managers, supervisors and site managers who are expected to implement safety systems in the workplace. If you are involved in the management, planning, organising, monitoring or administering of construction safety, you will only be able to work on a site if you are SMSTS certified. The five-day course will be focused on health and safety laws and requirements.
