How To Renew A FISS/CSCS And CSCS Card?

July 9, 2026 By Tim

It goes without saying that having the right skills to work in building and construction is vital. Just as vital, however, is being able to prove that you hold these skills to clients and employers. In light of this, holding a valid Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card is a real asset. It shows potential employers you have the knowledge to work safely on-site and can help you find work more easily.

But what do you do if your card has expired? Let’s take a look at how you can renew your FISS/CSCS and CSCS card.

Apply For New FISS/CSCS And CSCS Card

All FISS/CSCS Cards are valid for 5 years, providing the relevant Health & Safety training/testing has been completed within the past 2 years.

A first time application for a standard Green CSCS Card is valid for 2 years, after this, you must then provide evidence to show you are still employed as a labourer, your future Green CSCS cards will then be valid for 5 years. It is important to renew your CSCS Cards either 6 months before or after the expiry date otherwise it will be a new application.

What Do You Need To Do To Renew Your Card?

For FISS/CSCS Cards, to renew your card, you need to have passed the relevant CITB HS&E test within the last 2 years, and completed the relevant Health & Safety course within the last 2 years. For Green and Blue cards this will be the Level 1 Health & Safety course, for Gold cards this will be the SSSTS course and for Black cards this will be the SMSTS course.

Renewing Green CSCS Cards, you need to have passed the CITB HS&E Operatives test within the past 2 years, alongside the Level 1 Health & Safety in a Construction environment certificate. Some Level 1 Health & Safety courses have different rules if they are a lifetime qualification, or only valid for 5 years, so please check this with CSCS before renewing.

Renewing Blue, Gold or Black CSCS Cards just require the relevant CITB HS&E test to be passed in the last 2 years, you may also need to provide evidence of the NVQ you achieved to gain that card.
