The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
The regulatory framework for the safe use of power tools in the workplace is set out in The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, or PUWER, which are monitored and enforced by the Health and Safety Executive to ensure that work equipment doesn’t contribute to health and safety risks, regardless of its age, origin, or condition.
PUWER applies to all individuals and companies that own, operate, or have managerial control over work equipment, requiring that all equipment is suitable for use, and for the purpose and conditions in which it is intended. The machinery must be maintained in a safe condition so that operator safety and health is not at risk, and regular inspections must be carried out to ensure that this remains the case, with any potential hazard from using the equipment eliminated or controlled through safe systems of work.
